A few carp fishing questions?
ByI want to focus a bit on carp fishing
My setup:
-7′ two piece Rhino Rod (with that indestructible glow tip)
-Spider spinner reel (gear ratio 5:3:1)
-And currently I have 3 types of lines to choose from: 12lb mono clear, 15lb clear and 20lb mono blue.
I kind of want to spool the 20lb because I need to cast very far (the huge/bigger carp hang out in the middle of the lake) and just simply because some of the fish seem like they could be really big.
Just would like to know others opinions on this setup.
I also heard using the metal leaders is bad/unsafe for fish. So upon my rig setup, I thought about just making a leader with that 20lb line.. Any opinions on that?
(by the way, does corn stay on the hook well if you cast really far out there?)
Thanks in advance!
Bonus to anyone if you know what states dont allow using corn as bait. (herd alot of states made it illegal) I live in NM.
I know that heavier line means shorter casting, but I was thinking of it in terms of attaching enough weight to compensate for the cast. And I figured with the length of line casted out and type of fish I was going for, that the 20lb would be ideal for stretch and play?

The 20lb leader will give you the shortest casting distance. I would suggest using braided line like Power Pro or Spider Wire. You will gain strength but lose line diameter, allowing you to cast further.
Wire leaders are generally only used for fish whose teeth can cut through traditional monofilament or hybrid leaders, like pike and muskies. Carp don’t posses these kind of teeth. It would be pointless using them and would actually diminish the amount of bites you get.
Always use a leader at least 2lbs tensile strength weaker than your mainline. That way if you hook into a large fish or get snagged up you only loose your leader, not all the line you have in the water.
I don’t know if NM allows the use of corn or not. A night crawler or garden worm has always brought them to my hook. Try putting some scent on it. ProCure makes a flavor called Carp Spit.

20lb line is going to cast the LEAST well. 12lb or 15lb will work for just about any size Carp as long as your reel has a good drag and the drag is set about 1/2 the lines breaking strength (6lb drag for 12lb line, about 8lb drag for 15lb line). Plus, a lot of Carp (the big ones especially) can be line-shy and lighter lines just catch more fish.
Corn should be legal. And yes it stays on the hook well.
This is how your rig should be…
12lb mono main-line, 1/2oz egg sinker, barrel swivel, leader of about 2′ in length, leader line (12lb or 15lb mono will do fine), and a #4 baitholder hook with enough corn kernels to cover the entire hook.

Oops! I thought this was in reference to my favorite sports announcer on channel 2 news in Anchorage, Alaska!
Mr Carpenter was nicknamed “Carp” because of his inability to catch fish, any fish when he started the tv stations fishing forecasts in south central Alaska.
Happily for him and for us viewers, “Carp” has become a fine fisherman, 24/7 and every season of the year!
You can find his fishing forecasts every Friday about 6:45 pm during fishing season on channel 2 news, Anchorage, Alaska.
