bait caster fishing reel gear ratio?

By

this will be my first bait caster reel and i am wondering if i should get a 6.4:1 gear ratio or a 5.2:1 gear ratio. my spinning reel is a 5.1:1. Most of my fishing is done off the shores with top water baits, small spinners, and all kinds of plastics.

Stick with a reel that has a 6-point-whatever gear ratio. The 6-point gear ratio’s are best for all-around bass fishing, as they are not too slow to fish a buzzbait but still not too fast to fish a crankbait. Whether it be 6.3:1, 6.4:1, or 6.1:1 I’d go with it. A 7-point gear ratio is too fast to fish a crankbait, and a 5-point gear ratio is too slow for a buzzbait. But a 6-point gear ratio will fish both of those fine.

i will go with something in the 6 if u are just going to fish off the store

The answer will depend on your personal preferences. For example, some people like to use a faster reel for topwater because they like to take up the slack quicker (and this depends on the technique you are using and also your personal style.) I would go with the faster ratio if you like to move your baits quicker and slower if you dont typically “burn” your baits through the water. I like using a slower reel for plastics (and as a result, I have several reels that cover the whole range but that isnt necessary unless you are very specific about the techniques that you will be using.) One question to ask is do you like using your slower spinning reel for your style of fishing? If the answer is yes then go ahead and pickup the 5:2:1. If you are missing fish on topwaters because you cant get the slack out of your line fast enough then go with the 6:4:1. I would recommend buying the most expensive baitcaster you can afford because quality seems to make more of a difference with baitcasters than with spinning reels. Hope this helps and good luck!

Yea you definitely need to stick with the 6.3 or 6.4:1 gear ratio seeing as how your fishing with a wide variety of baits. if you were just fishing with hard baits or just fishing with soft plastics it wouldbe a different story but when you use several kinds of baits its always best to get a gear ratio right in the middle.

I use the higher ratio reels for every thing but large bladed spinner baits and deep diving crank baits. I have found that it is not so tiring if you have a lower gear ratio on the hard to reel in baits such as these two. I especially like the high ration reels for my buzz bait fishing and my plastic fishing. When I fish the plastics, I don’t like to fish what I call “dead water” and once my lure is out of the area I feel the fish are holding in I like to burn it back in to get more casts in during the trip.Very seldom will I fish a plastic all the way back to the boat.
