Best canned cat food?
ByI switched my cats over to a wet food diet and currently have them on by Nature Organics. I can’t find all that many reviews on it, I guess it isn’t sold in a lot of places? We have it at PetSmart here. No fillers, grains, etc. All organic and natural ingredients. I’ve read a TON about Avoderm and how people really like it and their cats seem to like it, but I’m a tad apprehensive to give it to my cats, as it has rice flour and oat bran in the canned ones. Anyone have any input? Better brands to try?
While I’m here.. I know cats shouldn’t have tuna because of the magnesium and its bad for their kidneys. What about other fish? My older cat loves a pouched food with whole pieces of Mackerel in it by by nature organics. Is that ok?
I wish I could feed them Wellness or Evo.. They aren’t readily available unless I drive 20+ miles to the next town ![]()
I’ve been reading about wellness and they put veggies and fruits in their foods.. both of which cats don’t particularly need. Wouldn’t this cause blood sugar problems?
greg, if cats what meat, why do you give them dry food?…. Wet food is better for overall health.. dry food is a major contributor to kidney stones, diabetes, etc.. read up on it, its quite surprising. The teeth thing is a myth. If you ever really sit and watch your cat eat dry food, it doesn’t even chew it, just breaks it up and swallows large chunks whole, and some gets stuck between teeth and can rot, making teeth problems worse.

Wysong, Wellness or Evo.
Avoid fish. Not really good for cats in general.

My kitties eat Nature’s Variety Instinct canned and California Natural canned and seem to do very well on those. A lot of people like Wellness, but my cats won’t eat it.
Edit to add: I have to drive 40 miles to get them! I stock up… : )

Dry cat food is better for the cats diet and it is also better for keeping the teeth clean. I feed my cat dry cat food (cat chow) and the wet food once in a while. But overall cats want meat. they don’t eat things such as vegetable.

By Nature Organics is a good food. It was one that I considered when I decided to change brands. One thing I really liked about it was the fact that it claims very low calories. Unfortunately it was hard to come by at my fave pet store so I ended up going with something else. When I finally did get some my cats didn’t care for it. Oh well.
But it’s good food – assuming this is the one you mean:
If your cat likes fish, it’s ok to offer it 2-3 times per week. That should be safe enough unless your cat has known urinary problems.
Other good brands are listed in the link below.
Wellness: This is a good food and I don’t really see the added fruits as a problem. Obviously they’re not necessary, but I try to be forgiving of otherwise good foods. There just isn’t a perfect commercial cat food but some like Wellness come pretty close. If you don’t care for the ingredients, that’s fine. I have been using it for nearly a year for one cat (the other eats raw) and she’s doing fine on it.
If Petsmart is the only readily available pet store for you, then I would stick with the BNO. I’m pretty sure that’s the best they carry.
Perhaps what you could do is make the 20 mile trek to the other store and grab 1-2 cans of other varieties. Give them a try. If your cats seem to go for any of them, make another trip and get some more. If after two trips any cat is still steadily eating one of them, it would seem safe to buy a case or so. That way you won’t have to go there as often.
