Blackfish (Tautog) fishing tips and what bait.?
ByWell it’s Blackfish season and I’m not very experienced in fishing them, setting the hook is the hardest as many blackfish anglers would know. They are the sneakiest bait stealers I’ve come across. Is it just as frustrating to catch these fish even for seasoned veterans? Should I set the hook when the tap-taps turn to tugs?
The bait of choice for most are crabs (Green, blue, fiddlers, etc.) is there a bait that can do a better job than crabs, they seem to nibble around it until theres nothing left but the hook.
I’ve never used any other bait, would clams, shrimp, whelk, squid work just as well?
Thanks.

How about fly fishing on the idea.

Use circle hooks #4 or 5 and when they take bait just start reeling, do not set the hook.
