it all depends what type of body of water you fish, dont be afraid to ask people around you and see what they are using if they are catching bigger fish, Usually fisherman will be helpful and you can come back after a trip to the bait shop and attack those babies, and also some luck will help

It’s part strategy and part luck.
Your local bait store may be helpful. I would stop by and ask the guy behind the counter what the catfish and bass are biting on.

If u want to catch bream, bluegills, or perch consistently, start using crickets. These fish r spawning where I live right now (NC) and u catch the devil out of them using crickets and a cork. Find a place where there beds r (thats where they lay there eggs) and u can catch one just about every throw. U can recognize the beds because they will be in shallow water, usually 2-3 feet deep. The fish take there tails and sweep them back and forth leaving a cleared out spot on the lake or pond bottem. They r about the size of a big plate. Once u find the beds, just put your cork about 1-2 feet above your cricket and u should catch a load. My father and his brother went the other day to a lake and fished these beds and caught well over a hundred bream, bluegills, etc. in about 2 hours using crickets. U can also use small pieces of nightcrawlers as well. Just remember to use a very, very small hook. Hope this helps u out..

its more luck than anything else but if its a nice clear day and warm water use jigs if its clear and cool use a soft bait
if its clear and cold use a crank bait
but again most of it is luck

Then bigger fish deeper or hanging in hard to fish spots like under dock pilings, bridge abutments, sunken stumps, fallen trees, If you are in a boat and fishing facing the shore, be aware, that the bigger fish are behind you in deeper water. The bigger fish also like the murkier waters rather than clear water.

It depends on the body of water. Some have smaller stunted fish and others have larger fish, or a combination.
