it only took us 2 minutes after we put the bait on to hook this river monster, and we just got down to the river to fish, and then 15 minutes to get it in, just as soon as the bait hit the bottom this guy nailed it!!!

The Big Muskies of Ontario

According to some fishermen, there are only two kinds of fish: muskellunge, and everything else. These sportsmen travel the Midwest searching for their prey, and if it’s less than 50 inches long they don’t even mention it to their friends. Usually called “Muskie,” no other fish creates such a fanatical following as the muskellunge. There’s good reason for that, and their monstrous size is only one consideration.

Muskie are abundant in many American lakes and rivers, but they are most commonly sought in the Midwestern states. They tolerate a wide range of water temperatures, but must have clear water. You won’t find Muskie in water that is usually turbid. They also prefer water with little or no current. Muskie are not generally found in rivers with a drop of more than 10 foot per mile, although they can be taken from backwater areas of rivers with fast currents. They prefer shallow, weedy areas when they are young, but as they mature they move into deepwater areas. Big Muskie weigh up to 65 lbs and are the top predator of any body of water where they are found. They have long, needlelike teeth and certainly know how to use them.

Just one look at a Muskie and you will know why they are special to fishermen. They are in the Pike family, and in fact are the largest members of that family. They look like large Pike with greenish silver sides featuring dark markings, and cream colored undersides with brownish spots. Sometimes their fins are a beautiful deep red. They can interbreed with northern pike, resulting in what is called a “tiger Muskie” with irregular stripes on their sides. Muskie are very desirable as a trophy fish, and at times have been over fished. Conservation efforts have been implemented several times, and then removed when populations rebounded. Bait-cast reels are best for Muskie, fitted to a heavy rod with 80 lb braided line and a buck tail lure. Most Muskie are released after catch, unless they are kept for wall trophies.

Although these fish are common enough, they are loners. Don’t expect to catch 4 or 5 on a typical day of fishing. Many fans travel north to find big Muskie, all the way to Ontario. This may sound odd, since the fish prefer warmer waters, but monstrously large fish have been caught in the cold, clear lakes of the Moon River Basin. The record for Ontario is a 65 pounder measuring 58 inches in length and 30.5 inches in girth.

Ontario offers Muskie anglers a variety of fishing sites, lodging choices and guided expeditions. Typically the fisherman is asked to choose an expedition based on either size, or number. That is to say, would you rather hunt for the 40 pound monsters that are sometimes caught (and the 65 pound record that might be caught) or go after quantity with 10 to 15 pounders that are frequently hooked? Striped bass feed on sand eels on the flats. Would have taken a shot at them but it was more fun to just watch the fish swin by my feet vs fishing for them. There is only so much top water bass fish you can get.
