Cold Steel Recon Scout Modifications & Review
By
www.usrsog.org I’m a big blade fan now that I’ve used the Cold Steel Recon Scout. Before acquiring this knife I was convinced that my SOG SEAL Pup was capable of performing all necessary bushcraft tasks. Now that I’ve spent some time in the bush building shelters, processing firewood, etc., I know how having a blade capable of chopping can save much needed energy. I still love my SEAL Pup, but I’ll be using it for day hikes and shorter trips. What I didn’t like about the Recon Scout was the hilt, or the guard. So, I removed the top portion and now I can choke up on the blade and place my thumb on the spine. I also increased the size of the finger groove as it was too small for my finger. That added to being able to choke up on the knife for finer work like carving. I also added a Ranger band (bicycle inner tube) to the handle for a better grip. I added my regular survival kit to the sheath-550 paracord, fishing line and hooks, aluminum duct tape and a pouch containing a Gerber Clutch Multi-tool, steel striker, mini-hacksaw, carbide sharpener and snare wire. I love it so far and I’ll be adding a demonstration video soon. Thanks for watching and please leave comments and feedback. *The manual in the video is called “Six Ways In & Twelve Ways Out”. I see allot people have that, when you try to put bicycle tube onto your handle, try to pull the tube inside out, then cover your handle. it just adds anoter + to comfort when youre already inproving it:)

@carlyle0229 Well, I have em both, and the Recon Tanto is without doubt the best knife I have ever owned, and I`ve had em all.More versital than the SRK,and more portable than the Scout,it is unbeatable. But dont take my word, I`ve only been into knives for 40 years now…

i saw ur Scout, love it! I took the plunge, and cut off the top of the guard too..like it much better. It resembles the Northwest Ranger now. I like all your videos. Keep em coming..

Hi there, Nice mod on your knife. I also made a slight mod to mine, but I have a problem maybe you can help. I wraped my handle with 550 paracord with a lanyard loop. However.. the nylon retaining strap doesn’t stap close. Do you have any ideas on how I can get a 16th of a inch of stretch to the strap to getting it closed.?

I’m just starting to get into back packing and camping out. Did it when a Boy Scout. I purchased this knife because of Nutn review. Yes I cut and split wood with it. It is excellent for that and much more. Your review just backs up what I already knew. Thank you for sharing I appreciated that. Have a great day

I just ordered this knife today. I must have watched 15-20 reviews, did tons of research, and out of it all the only thing I didn’t like was the fact that the knife is made in China. But out of all the reviews, your review got me to push the “place order” button.
Thank you

Didn’t you say that you wouldn’t even consider the Gerber LMF II because it was too heavy at 11.7ozs? And yet here you are giving all praise to the mighty gods of “Cold Steel” over a knife that is over 15ozs!!! Hipocrite!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

@envirosponsible If you’re looking for a cheap(er) one, ChestnutRidgeKnifeShop sells factory seconds of them on eBay for around $65 plus shipping. If you don’t know what factory seconds are, they’re just certain knives that didn’t make it through QC because of aesthetic defects. I’ve bought a few FS’s, and in most of my instances, it was because of a bad tang-stamping, which doesn’t affect the performance. Haha. I would say go for the ESEE Junglas, though. It’s just a beast. It is heavy, though.
