Do you consider fish to be meat? Why or why not?
ByI’m a vegetarian and I have always argued that fish is meat. Whenever I tell someone I don’t eat meat, they always ask if I eat fish (or animal crackers).
If asked to define meat, I’d say it’s any tissue coming from an animal – or better yet, something capable of life. Not only to fish fall under that category, but all seafood (clams, etc. not seaweed and the like) and humans do as well. I don’t care one bit if anyone else eats it, I just don’t like it.
I discussed this with a friend that feels very strongly that fish is not meat. He knows I’m indifferent about the matter and that my vegetarianism is just part of my picky diet, not an extreme way of living. When I asked him to provide an explanation behind his opinion, all he could come up with was “Because it’s just NOT meat!”
So I ask you all: Do you think it’s meat? Why or why not?
Wow some great answer so far. I hope this continues.
Just for the record, this isn’t about vegetarianism or veganism. I’m not a vegan and I’m a vegetarian because I don’t LIKE meat. It’s not a philosophy I have, I’m just a picky eater. I don’t like vegetables, either. I don’t like the idea of killing animals, but who does? I consider it part of the food chain. It’s edible, so eat it if you want. I don’t want to, so I don’t. That has nothing to do with why I think fish is meat. To me, it doesn’t make sense to say it isn’t.

Meat comes from an animal, mammals or fowl which are warm blooded and have much more complex nervous systems .Fish are cold blooded ,and theoretically it’s not as big a sin to kill and eat them.

Fish is fishmeal, not meat. Just like eggs are not meat. However for vegetarians, fish are not vegetables either.

The muscle tissue or flesh of any animal is meat. A fish is an animal. Meat does not mean beef. Poultry is meat, pork is meat, humans are meat.

whats the difference then between a simple form of animal life, and a complicated form of plant life, where do you draw the line and when does killing for sustinance become murder,
if your not happy with eating something then dont eat it, but theres a lot of animal life out there that doesnt even have a brain, they have no means of thinking or living to our level, why give them the same privelege as you might give higher forms of life, do you think plants want to be eaten ? that somehow a scallop is more a philosipher or was enjoying the bits of stuff it was filtering out of the water the same way that a tree pulls nutrients from the soil when it sucks up water from the ground ?
