exceptional parent magazine and autism article?

By

has anyone read the recent exceptional parent magazine’s article on a family with three autistic children? the article is called finding their way. in the article it mentions how the children were put on a casin and gluten free diet and given cod liver oil, vitamin B12, and glyconutrients and phytonutrients supplements, these supplements had a tremendously profound effect on the autistic kids. they went from not talking at all to talking and the began passing their occupational and physical therapy goals as well as thier ABA goals it goes on to say that their awarness and understanding improved as well. my question is : what are these phytonutrients and glyconutrients? ( the article gives some explaination) are they pills or vitamins? where can I purchase these? I already know about the B12 and fish oil. but I have never heard or the phyto and glyconutrients. and if you have an autistic or adhd child and have not read this article, then get a copy of it or better yet subcribe to it .

I have heard of this and it’s very controversial. My son has Aspergers. It’s on the autistic spectrum. His doctor is on staff at a major teaching hospital where the chief of psychiatry specializes in autism. I asked whether or not she had heard of it and if it would help. She said that their was no research to support it.

However, improving anyone’s diet has to be of some help. It certainly can’t hurt.

Glyconutrients are:
Fucose (not to be mistaken for fructose)
Galactose
Glucose
Mannose
N-acetylgalactosamine (GalNAc)
N-acetylglucosamine (GlcNAc)
N-acetylneuraminic acid (Neu5Ac)
Xylose

Phytonutrients are fruits and vegetables.

I’m sure you could find these at any health food store. Some of the better ones have an advisor that works where the supplements are.

In addition to all that is listed many parents are adding digestive enzymes as the ASD children actually suffer from digestive problem which when healed, dramatically, if not completely, reduce symptoms. Most MDs don’t believe in the biomed approach, instead choosing to believe autism disorders are genetic. Naturopaths, homeopaths and DAN! MDs are treating with biomed approaches like the article mentions though. There may be a genetic predisposition, but most parents will testify to definite environmental triggers – like vaccinations, metal exposure – lead, aluminum, or others.

We have a son that was symptomatic for Aspergers for years, but since MDs don’t do much other than prescribe psych meds, pharmaceuticals and special educational attention, we never bothered with a diagnosis. He was normal enough, especially since we homeschool. But, we ran across the biomed approach at Autism-Mercury Yahoo Group, and have been completely blown away by the difference it has made in him. We’ve simply added enzymes, probiotics (acidophilus, and others), and grapefruit seed extract for yeast control and he is functioning so much better! Those things are just controlling, not repairing. Our next step will be to start healing his gut issues and removing metal toxicity so that he doesn’t have to chase a symptom rabbit the rest of his life.

Thanks for the heads up about the article. I agree that changes like this can make a profound difference in many kids, and there are many testimonies out there just like this – including non-verbal kids whose parents do biomed and the kids end up going to regular classes as normal children. I’ve even see some try to get the special ed diags reversed so the kids can have normal lives – now that they are normal.
