Question by awesome mickey.: Can you support my grammatical corrections?
“In those years, while herring seemed to be vanishing from the Norwegian coastline, the large population on the tiny island of Kladesholmen were fishing and processing herring, as well as cod and ling.”
–were should be was. correct?

“A lamparo was a huge light on a bouy that was some five feet high, carried out to sea hanging from a hook mounted at the bow of the boat”
-There should be commas before hanging and before mounted. correct?

Thanks

Best answer:

Answer by susan n
I agree with your first correction but not your second because the meaning is clear without commas.
In the first example the noun and verb don’t agree.

Question by Pirate Man: Help stocking my 25 gallon tank?
I have a 25 gallon tank, it’s almost done cycling, and I want to figure out exactly what’s going in there later. Right now it has 4 zebra danios and 4 guppies but I’m going to move them. I don’t want a brackish or a saltwater tank, just a freshwater/tropical. I’d like colourful fish, that swim at different levels, and maybe one or two “centerpiece fish”.

So I like neon tetras, platys, mollies, swordtails, and maybe guppies. I was thinking about some sort of gourami for the “centerpiece”. I like the kuhli loach, and/or maybe some corydoras for the bottom fish, or a bristlenose pleco? What about a snail? I also read about the blue lobster that sounds interesting.

Just wondering what would be a good way to set up this tank, those are fish that sound neat to me, maybe there’s some I forgot about. It’d be great if you could let me know some different set ups of what and how many of each, and also if there’s anything they need decoration wise, because I just have a castle in there now, and was going to check if the fish needed anything before deciding how to set it up. Thanks.

Best answer:

Answer by canoehead
Everything you listed sound compatible except the Blue Lobster, he will eat every fish in the tank when he catches them, never over crowd a tank 1 inch of fish for every gallon of water. A large gourami could cause problems with small tetras

Creamy Fish with Potatoes and Fennel on a Plate
This was my first time cooking with fennel, the plant. I have used the seeds many times but never the bulb. It was very good and I will be using it again.

1 fennel bulb and stalk, cleaned and sliced
3-4 garlic cloves, minced
Heavy cream (or I used skim milk and a couple Tbs of unsalted butter)
White wine
2 lb potatoes, cut into bite-sized pieces
1 lb talapia
Paprika
Salt and pepper

Preheat your oven to 450 F. Sprinkle both sides of the fish with salt, pepper and paprika.

Put a pan over medium heat and cook the fennel with the garlic for 6-8 minutes. Add the potatoes, cream (or milk and butter) and wine. Cook for 20 minutes or until the potatoes just begin to soften.

If the pan is oven proof, add the fish and put in the oven. Otherwise transfer the vegetables and sauce to a baking dish and add the fish. Cook until the fish is done, about 20 minutes.

See it fresh out of the oven here.

Question by : Questions about cleaning a fish tank?
I have a 10 Gallon Fish Tank in my room with 2 goldfish in it.

1. How often should I clean it?
2. How often should I clean the whole tank? (Like a complete water change)
3. Do I have to remove the fish when I clean the tank?
4. How often should I put the liquid in it that says it “neutralizes chlorine, chloramine, & heavy metals harmful to fish”. You only need 1 tsp per 10 gallons. When I got the tank I put a tsp in, but should I put it in every time I clean the tank?
5. To clean my tank…do all I have to do is scrub the sides and use the gravel vac?
6. What exactly does the gravel vac do?
I’m asking these questions because it is my first time having a big tank and I dont want to do anything stupid! One of my fish is a fantail and the other is just a small goldfish (not a comet…i’m not sure what its called) But anyways a 10 gallon tank was all I could afford right now, and all I have room for. Its better then the 3 gallon tank I had them in last week!

& are you guys saying I need to mix the liquid cleaning stuff with the new water I’m adding in the tank and let it mix in before I put that water into the tank? How long should I wait before I add the new water then?

Best answer:

Answer by SCF
You may want to get a striped catfish. I had one that was 3 or 4 inches long. they’re bottom feeders, and will even feed on the sides of the tank. Then you won’t need to scrub so often!

What do you think? Answer below!

Question by The Unknown: Vegetarians only, Help!!? Barbecue disaster..? (it’s kinda long)?
I’ve been an ovo-lacto-vegetarian for about 2 months (not long, i know) but I’m already very passionate about it due to animal rights reasons. I come from a family of animated omnivores, so I knew that it wouldn’t be easy to live a veggie life with them.
It all started with a phone convo with my bf, we talked about what goes on in slaughter houses and it suddenly turned into a bet, he bet me I wouldn’t be able to go 2 weeks as a vegetarian.. well I certainly surpassed that.
Anyways, yesterday he invited me to a family bbq at his uncles house for his birthday.. and thats where it all started. This was the menu: hamburgers, cheeseburgers, hot dogs, hot dogs wrapped in bacon, or breaded fish. The side dishes were cheetos, potato chips, salsa, and some pieces of cucumber. And that’s it, there were no salads, no veggie trays, nothing. I was nervous but i knew i’d be okay if I just had some cheetos and cucumber slices. everyone knows imma veggie, so they all started talking about what i could eat, at first they teased me saying i could eat the grass in the backyard, but then they got onto the fish. “Come on, it’s my secret recipe!” his uncle said, “Just have one piece! I’m gonna tell your mom that you didn’t eat my food!” (Then my bfs mom piped in “Just forget about being a vegetarian for today, just eat some fish and don’t think about it!!” They were all smiling and laughing so i knew they didn’t mean any offense, but it still put me in a very awkward position. “No haha, it’s okay” i replied. My bf was standing right behind me, completely silent, but he shook his head at his mom on her comment.
His uncle came up with an idea and made some quesadillas for me (which i thanked him profusely for) so i did get to eat. But it was very awkward after that because his brother and best friend started up a vegetarian vs. omnivore convo. “Animals don’t have rights, they don’t have feelings. Humans are the only ones with rights”…”I don’t care if they torture animals, i’m not doing it but idc if they do.” (Then his bro to my bf as if he’s showing off how much better his gf is): “Kenz (kenz is my bff and his girlfriend) and i have talked about being veggie and she said she never will be!” ,, and ect. I jumped in occasionally to post my side but i was shot down by a handful of people, including my bf. Eventually i just sat down and tried to ignore all the snide comments about being a veggie (now his fam is mexican so they were speaking spanish which i now understand most of, probably more than they assume).
then his mom asked me to tell everyone why i was a vegetarian,.. so unwillingly i did. I told them about the bet, and everyone shot my bf weird looks. His friend shook is head “why did you do that?” and my bf replied ” I don’t know, i didn’t know she would overreact like this.”
That hurt. In fact it all hurt. All the comments, and the pressure to eat the meat, all the guilt i felt for not eating the prepared food, and especially my boyfriends lack of support. Now i know he disagrees with my being a veggie but it’s getting worse. he’s dissing on it and telling me he wishes he didn’t “ruin my life” by starting that bet…
What do i do? how do i stick up for myself without starting a debate or making people think i think im superior? I’m not trying to change anyone, i respect their opinions, so why cant they respect mine (esp. my bf)?
(i have tried talking to my bf but it always starts a fight…)

Help me please, and no rude comments, i get enough of those everyday. I’m not imposing my beliefs so please don’t impose yours.
I’d appreciate it if mainly vegetarians/vegans helped me out here, someone with personal experiance.
Thanks so much!!:)
(btw i’m 16)

Answer by Kelsey
hey thats kind of how i started going veg ! i made a bet with my friend that i couldnt go veg for a week and now three years later….ANYWAYS if your bf is trying to pressure you to do something you dont want to then maybe hes not the right guy for you…do what YOU believe in and if noone else supports you, then i, a complete stranger, will support you !

Question by Doodlebug!!!: We are having a Church Fair and I am in charge of Kids Activities- Any Suggestions?
We are having our Annual Church Fair in a week and I am in charge of crafts/ games for the kids. We have those make your own sugar sticks, face painting, and the fishing pond where they throw the “rod” over to get a prize(candy). I need some craft ideas that are cheap to prepare, but worth charging 50cents for. Does anyone have ideas?

Answer by The Boss
Pumpkin painting, supply them with little pumpkins, maybe someone can donate them.
Cookie decorating, have some of the members bring un-iced sugar cookies.
Bean bag toss.
Hillbilly Horseshoes.
That balloon thing where you have teams then run to a chair and sit on it to pop it.
Sack races.
Bozo buckets…
