Tarpon fishing from a pier should be interesting! as for line I would use 50lb braid with 40lb florocarbon leader.

that is kinda the size range you should be looking at. A reel (spinning or casting) w/ atleast a 17lb drag. Sure you can catch decent tarpon on a smaller setup or a bigger setup but thats an adverage tarpon rod.

I don’t know what setup you are using and I don’t know what size tarpon you are going for but all tarpon are very strong runners and will spool your line pretty quick. Don’t buy a cheap reel Tarpon are rough on your gear. Get a good quality reel that can hold at least 200+ yards of whatever line you are going to use, For a spinning reel I recommend 50 or 65lb PowerPro braid, 65lb test PowerPro has the diameter of 16lb mono so will be able to fit more line on the reel. For spinning reels I would go with a Shimano or Penn in the $60 and up price range like the Shimano Sedona and Penn Sargus. Some good but inexpensive conventional reels are Shimano Tekota, Penn GT2 320 or 330, and of course the Penn Senator. Hope I could help, oh yeah make sure you do some stretches before going after Tarpon, I tore a Bicep fighting a 106 pounder for over a hour

I’d probably go with a Fin-Nor Offshore spinning reel, size OFS45 or OFS55. 50lb or 65lb braid as a main-line.
