The deckhands or “first mates” really do make a damn good living. We go fishing in Orange beach every year for snaper. Every time we charter a boat, the captain informs us that the deckhand works for tips only. I know they run their butts off keeping up with all the passengers rigging up the baits for you and unhooking the fish you catch and at the end of the trip the deckhand usually clean your fish for you. Most people tip the deckhands between 20 to 40 dollers. Most chartered boats take on around 12 people for example and if all 12 people tipped 20 bucks, that guy made $240.00 for a 6 hour cruise and thats all cash money, reporting no taxes!! Id say thats really good money condisering a skilled union construction worker makes about that much for 8 hours hard work. Some boats go out in the morning and make another cruise later that afternoon meaning the deckhand makes twice that amount in a day.
One other time my friends and I flew to SanDiego Calif. and chartered a boat. The deckhand guy was like 19 years old. He said he had quit school and was a deckhand for 3 years. He said he already owned his own condo, had a new car and was making over a hundred thousand dollers a year. We all couldnt believe it but if you do the math, it all makes sense.

I am not sure of your area but a hand on which type of charter boat a party or private charter!
I have done both and I made better money from tips working on head boats over private charters just because of the amount of ppl on-board.If I based this solely on client percentage the private charter tips averaged more money. I could make $60 to $125 for a 4 to 18 hour P/C but on a good party boat charter I have made up to $250 on a 3 day run!So based on averages the P/C worked out better for hours worked and client base.
I also made up and sold rigs for ppl plus other baits for them to use but only do this if allowed.I had one captain tell me I had to give him a percentage of what I made needless to say I left his vessel and went to work for Capt Sonny. He allowed me to work hard and make extra money as long as it did not interfere with the quality of service to other clients. That is just the tips some have been even higher but just put down on average base!
So yes it can be very good for a hard working hand to make a ok living doing this type of work!
Types of pay – percentage based on sale of charter (not sure if this is done now) + hourly + tips, just hourly + tips, per charter pay + tips(again not sure if this done anymore) and salary also but not sure of what type you may get!.
Good luck it was a fun job!

If the passengers take care of you and YOU take care of the passengers… then Yes you can make some money.
That Deck Hand did not stop working when the boat got back by the way. He has plenty of other tasks. Often a very long day.
No slacker keeps his slot on the working boats. Good luck.
PS Bring plenty of sun screen.

Don’t know, but I love fishing for the big Bull Reds out there. You’d probably do best getting your own boat. We paid $300 plus tips for three people to fish for 4 to 5 hours.
