I need advice with shark fishing reels!?

By

I’ve started shark fishing recently. I use a Penn Senator 113H with 80 pound braid line. Is this a good reel to use or should i get a larger one, if so what should I get and where can i buy it online. and also what is the best pound test line i should use?
*Well i have caught my first shark with my current reel. It was a 5 foot bull shark and my reel seemed to handle it pretty good. but i later had my 80 pound test line snapped twice after that…so im looking for a reel that will hold much more line and stronger line. i would like to have a reel that holds about 1000 yards or more of 100 lb test or something like that. and i don’t really want to spend too much more than 300 on the reel

The main thing is….what is your budget? I would go with a 2 speed reel and a decent rod to match. Overall weight, materials used, and what kind of sharks targeted. Of course you want to give the fish a fighting chance. As you probably surfed online of the different prices, different materials, for different applications.

Technically you could use a penn 500 on spectra, with a wire leader so…

The 113H, would be ok, for small sharks ( under about 100# ).
for any larger sharks, you need a heaver duty reel, with more line capacity.

check Bass Pro Shops or Cabala’s

a 4/0 should be a good size for most sharks. it is considered a 50lb class reel. if you’re using a gel-spun braid superline, 80 should be fine. if you’re using braided dacron, it will hold close to 500 yards of 50. not nearly so much of 80.
if you do require 80lb dacron, perhaps you should move up to a 114 6/0. that will hold enough 80 for all but the very largest sharks.
bass pro shop sells them as well as their availability on ebay.

if you have your drag adjusted correctly, the only way you should get broken off using 80 is if you run out of line and get spooled. in this case, you need a larger reel.
1000 yards of 100lb dacron will fit on a penn 116 10/0. this is what l used for large fish. find a used one on ebay. no way to wear this reel out.

I believe you could catch just about any shark with the setup you have. Use it untill if fails you. You can spend a fortune on tackle and it won’t make you catch more fish.
