Monster Stripers.?
ByI surf fish and kayak fish off the Jersey shore. Any tips for catching monster stripers (20lbs and up) Bait, rig, hook size or lure? Please only answer if you have actually caught a big one with that setup.

First of all monster stripers are over 50 lbs.
Second of all they eat live eels.

Try around the jetties using bunker (menhaden) chunks. I use a 8/0 hook, but sometime I will use a 9/0. Since I fish from the surf, I keep my leader about 12: to 15″ so I could get casting distance. I wouldn’t use a leader more than 18″ yet some do. Also I use a three-way swivel with a sinker clip. If I’m tossing lures, I’ll use either a two-ounce hopkins or castmaster.

I use a top bottom rig, with fresh surf clams for bait. Fish around rocks, pilings, or any kind of structure. The record striper was taken from Atlantic City off Vermont Ave. Sept ’82 It weighed 78 1/2 lbs., and 53 in. long.
