Go with shimano, they have a pole out that it a smaller looking pole but can hold the weight of up to 100lbs!! it is about 150.00 here in Oregon, and my Husband uses it all the time. He swears by it. It is just the pole though no reel.

If you are going on a charter boat, there’s no need to bring your own equipment. The Captain will have everything you need to do whatever type of fishing you’ll be doing.

I personally like the Penn Slammer 460 spinning reels. They’re more expensive but well worth the money. I often use my reels a year or two then trade them in and they hold their value more than most other reels. Just having purchased two of the 460, I may keep them a good long while because a lot of guides use them and a awesome drag with a 4.6:1 gear.

The tackle you want will vary depending on where you’re fishing and what you’re fishing for. Florida tackle will be different from California tackle, and surface tackle will be different from bottom fishing tackle. Anyone making recommendations without knowing these is just wasting your time.

I would suggest you contact the charter skipper or landing and see if tackle is provided or can be rented. If you use this gear for a trip or two, you’ll get an idea of what you like and dislike about it, and can make a better decision when you do buy.

If you really want to buy an outfit, at least get an idea of the size and type of the gear recommended. Once you know what you’re looking for, then you can start looking at brands.
