Shark Fishing Reel??

By

Is my reel OK for shark fishing? Its a PENN 9500 SS (spinning reel). BTW Im fishing on Pensacola, FL Beach and there are a lot of sharks coming in because of oxygen and food shortages from the oil so there might be some pretty big sharks. I just want to make sure the reel will hold up. Thanks.

It depends on the size of the shark. I know I would much rather have a two speed conventional reel for large sharks.

It should work fine as long as you you don’t use line over 50lb test and you know how to use the drag correctly. I brought in a 82lb pound Bull shark on light spinning tackle last year. That reel is rated for 30lb line but if you use a heavier line occasionally it shouldn’t hurt it but if you want to fish for sharks on a regular basis I would get a offshore reel.

a Penn 950 is a huge spinning reel. String it with some braided line. Spider Wire or Power Pro 20 diameter, which is 100LB strength, would give you enough line without sacrificing strength. You could put roughly 400 yards of size 20 braid on a 950.

Fishing Pensacola beach you really don’t have any obstructions to worry about, so, it’s important to have lots of line because you know a shark is gonna take it if it can.

use a 8-10 foot leader of 100-150pound Mono with a 100# barrel swivel and a 8/0 to 10/0 circle hook.
