Help! After cleaning our pond yesterday, all our fish died! Does anyone know why?
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by gvdvsq05: Help! After cleaning our pond yesterday, all our fish died! Does anyone know why?
We had four young koi (about five inches long), a lot of small guppy-like fish, four fish with long, fanlike tails (I forget the breed, they were about the same size as our koi), and three smallish algae suckers. The pond is definitely big enough for all of them.
The pond was very dirty (algae mostly). Our fish seemed fine though, no abnormal appearances or behaviours. The guppy-like fish were even breeding, so the water conditions were pretty good.
We cleaned the pond (keeping some of the old water so the new water wouldn’t be such a shock to the fish), and today all our fish are dead.
Their bellies are swollen (not as big as dropsy though), and the scales around their gills are red. Other than this discolouration, there is no disturbance in the scales (none sticking out or whatever).
My husband commented that the water smelled funny “sort of like dead fish”, but this was before the death of our fish.

Sounds like chlorine poisoning – what kind of water did you use to refill the pond, and did you treat (i.e., dechlorinate) it first? Another possibility would be ammonia poisoning, as it will also burn the gills, but it generally takes longer to build up to deadly toxic levels than chlorine.
And I’m guessing your fish with long tails were either butterfly koi, or, more likely, shubunkin goldfish.
Hope this helps.

Questions about cleaning a fish tank?
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by : Questions about cleaning a fish tank?
I have a 10 Gallon Fish Tank in my room with 2 goldfish in it.
1. How often should I clean it?
2. How often should I clean the whole tank? (Like a complete water change)
3. Do I have to remove the fish when I clean the tank?
4. How often should I put the liquid in it that says it “neutralizes chlorine, chloramine, & heavy metals harmful to fish”. You only need 1 tsp per 10 gallons. When I got the tank I put a tsp in, but should I put it in every time I clean the tank?
5. To clean my tank…do all I have to do is scrub the sides and use the gravel vac?
6. What exactly does the gravel vac do?
I’m asking these questions because it is my first time having a big tank and I dont want to do anything stupid! One of my fish is a fantail and the other is just a small goldfish (not a comet…i’m not sure what its called) But anyways a 10 gallon tank was all I could afford right now, and all I have room for. Its better then the 3 gallon tank I had them in last week!
& are you guys saying I need to mix the liquid cleaning stuff with the new water I’m adding in the tank and let it mix in before I put that water into the tank? How long should I wait before I add the new water then?

You may want to get a striped catfish. I had one that was 3 or 4 inches long. they’re bottom feeders, and will even feed on the sides of the tank. Then you won’t need to scrub so often!

Q&A: How do I Get More Clientele for my New Fish Tank cleaning business, its just me?
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by Torsti: How do I Get More Clientele for my New Fish Tank cleaning business, its just me?
Ok,
I work at a Pet Shop and I’m into the whole aquarium thing. I know a lot about tank maintenance and so far I’ve had 2 “customers” so I decided to make my own side business to help with college and expenses.
I tried just mentioning it to customers who come in, especially those telling me they have problems keeping their tanks clean, etc..Im thinking of having business cards printed, I can get them for like 10 dollars, (what to put on them, picture wise logo, i have no clue)…
Now, what do I tell them to have them interested? I basically am a stranger to them when mentioning this…and I base my prices on like the size of the tanks..
For a customer, I would be taking my own “equipment”, as in, a tube connecting to the sink n the other end into the tank, my own water conditioners, water parameter studies, and myself (transportation getting there n back). I’ve charged 30 dollars for cleaning a 20 gallon tank, for 2 1/2 hours…
any questions, ill respond in the in the details part

Saltwater Butterfly fish “Cleaning” My Yellow Tang ?
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by moyersteven: Saltwater Butterfly fish “Cleaning” My Yellow Tang ?
I gold a dot butterfly fish yesterday and put him in with my yellow tang. At first my tang was chasing him around kinda nipping at him. I kept the lights off all day and all last night. I come home and it looks as if my butterfly is cleaning my tang. The tang will sit there why the butterfly picks at his side for a min. Is this normal. My tang looks healthy, eats and swims around fine. Are they like best of friends now or what could be going on? Thanks for any input in advance.
