Is this fish tank considered salt- or freshwater? Ok for German Blue Ram?
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by Emily B: Is this fish tank considered salt- or freshwater? Ok for German Blue Ram?
I have always added 1/2 tsp of “API Aquarium Salt” to each (properly-conditioned) gallon I cycle into my community aquarium.
I recently discovered German Blue Rams, labeled as strictly freshwater chiclids, with very low tolerance (if any) for salt water. My mollies/platies/swords/wags, etc are also considered “Freshwater” but are known do OK in various salinity levels.
Question 1: Would this water considered fresh, brackish or salt? The product IS called aquarium SALT. (But the packaging DOES say “For Freshwater Fish” on the label.) [See example at: http://www.theaquariumshop.com.au/shopexd.asp?id=1025&name=Aquarium+Pharmaceuticals+API+Aquarium+Salt+454g]
Question 2: Is this water basically suitable for a Blue Ram?

No.
What you have is a freshwater tank with added salt. You need marine salt to make a brackish aquarium.
Aquarium salt is a con. There are some uses for salt as a treatment in a freshwater tank but it is harmful to many fish and accumulates over time.
Mollies are hardwater to brackish fish and if they are thriving the rams won’t.

Are fish included in animal cruelty cases?
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by violet_starlyte: Are fish included in animal cruelty cases?
I went to my LFS and I was appalled at the condition he kept his fish in. Most were deformed or had horrible diseases and almost all looked underfed and skinny and were left in the tank with dead fish that had apparently been sitting there for awhile. The owner was just happily sitting at the desk watching TV rather than cleaning up the mess. Do fish even count in animal cruelty cases? I don’t even see how this guy is getting business. I decided to buy a couple guppies off of him in a “rescue” attempt. I don’t like the mentality that some people have that they are “just fish” because they suffer too just as much as any animal.

well no…except big fish. It does hurt my feeling whenever fish are treated bad…i had gotten a fish from the pet store and they told me it was a baby….NOPE it was a adult female that was pregnant and was sicka nd i felt bad for it and then it died before i got it home! ): i went back and screamed at them and asked them how could they let a poor fish just pretty much die? and now they have a new tank and many healthy looking fish! i wish the people in our world could imagine how they feel being trapped in a tank!!!!

Q&A: Anyone fish regularly on Lake Conroe, Texas?
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by monkeyman: Anyone fish regularly on Lake Conroe, Texas?
Where are the strippers??? I know the lake pretty well, so any detailed description would be greatly appreciated (coordinates would be even better). Im not going to take “your spot”, I live in houston so it wont be a problem…I visit my parents in willis, tx from time to time and enjoy trolling for fish. Any advice on what to look for (besides just following the birds)? Thanks for your time.

What is wrong with my fish?
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by : What is wrong with my fish?
I have 2 fish in a 10 gallon tank (I already know this is small)
1 is a fantail fish and the other is a tiny goldfish (not a comet though) . They’ve only been in the tank for a week and from doing research I think the fantail might have ammonia. I didnt really notice anything when I first got him, but recently he’s gotton these brownish spots on the side of his head (on its gills almost). At first it just looked the color of his body and I thought it was nothing. But the spots have been getting darker and his tail and fins even have a tiny bit of brown on them. What is wrong with my fish & what can I do to help it? When I got the tank I added fresh water, put in this liquid stuff that says it “neutralizes chlorine, chloramine, & heavy metals harmful to fish” and let the filter run for 24 hours before I added the fish. They have only been in this take for 5 days and I do plan on cleaning it out very soon. Can anyone please help me??

You fish can’t “have ammonia” ammonia is a chemical that builds up in the water and burns yoru fish. It comes from fish pee and rotten food.
If you didn’t cycle your tank for 6-8 weeks before adding your fish then it is cycling now. The ammonia is going to build up to dangerous levels since your tank is way overstocked, then good bacteria will start to build up in your tank and convert the ammonia to nitrite which is less toxic, more bacteria will build up and convert the nitrite to nitrate which can be removed by your filter and water changes. During this time period your fish may die which is why its best to do this without having fish in the tank. There is nothing you can do but wait and get a book on proper goldfish care.

Summer Fish Soup: the fish

Chopped onion, bell pepper, zucchini, all sauteed in olive oil. Add: chopped tomatoes, fresh corn cut from the cob. Add water to make a broth. Season: salt, pepper, garlic, thyme, basil, oregano, paprika. When vegetables are tender, add slices of meaty fish fillet (red snapper, halibut, striped bass, bluefish, etc) and simmer until fish just flakes apart. Serve with crusty bread, and a little hot sauce. We really like the Bermudan Outerbridge Sherry Peppers Sauce.

What fish?
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by brittxok1: What fish?
A redneck was stopped by a game warden in Central Mississippi recently with two ice chests full of fish. He was leavin’ a cove well-known for its fishing.
The game warden asked the man, “Do you have a license to catch those fish?”
“Naw, sir”, replied the redneck. “I ain’t got none of them there
licenses. You must understand, these here are my pet fish.”
“Pet fish?”
“Yeah. Every night, I take these here fish down to the lake and let ‘em swim ’round for awhile. Then, when I whistle, they jump right back into these here ice chests and I take ‘em home.”
“That’s a bunch of hooey! Fish can’t do that.”
The redneck looked at the warden for a moment and then said, “It’s
the truth Mr. Government Man. I’ll show ya. It really works.”
“O. K.”, said the warden. “I’ve got to see this!”
The redneck poured the fish into the lake and stood and waited. After several minutes, the warden says, ” Well?”
“Well, what?”, says the redneck.
The warden says, “When are you going to call them back?”
“Call who back?”
“The FISH”, replied the warden!
“What fish?”, replied the redneck.
Moral of the story: We may not be as smart as some city slickers, but
we ain’t as dumb as some government employees.
You can say what you want about the South, but you never hear of
anyone retiring and moving north.
oh yea…and I didn’t write it….it was e-mailed to me. I thought it was cute.
oh…aaaannnddd I live in the south but I also work for the government too…LOL
