Is it normal to be attracted to fish?
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by : Is it normal to be attracted to fish?
I keep having this issue – I find fish very attractive. I can’t stop looking at them, and sometimes I enjoy playing myself when I see fish on tv or something. Carp are my favourite, but my parents have this fish tank and one of the fish has markings on it that look like a woman’s body parts and I get aroused every time I walk past it. Does anyone else have a similar attraction to fish? How do I get over this? No girl will want to date me if they find out I like fish “that way”.

Pet fish……..?
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by Krazykraut: Pet fish……..?
A Texas redneck was stopped by a game warden in East Texas recently with two ice chests of fish, leaving a river well known for its fishing. The game warden asked the man, “Do you have a license to catch those fish?”
“Naw, my friend, I ain’t got no license. These here are my pet fish.”
“Pet fish?”
“Yep. Every night I take these fish down to the river and let ‘em swim’ round for a while. Then I whistle and they jump right back into this ice chest and I take ‘em home.”
“That’s a bunch of bull! Fish can’t do that!”
The redneck looked at the game warden for a moment and then said, “It’s the truth. I’ll show you. It really works.”
“Okay.” says the warden, “I’ve GOT to see this!”
The redneck poured the fish into the river and stood and waited. After several minutes, the game warden turned to him and said, “Well?”
“Well, what?” said the redneck.
“When are you going to call them back?”
“Call who back?”
“The FISH!”
“What fish?”

are there any allusions in the poem “the fish” by elizabeth bishop?
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by whats the answer: are there any allusions in the poem “the fish” by elizabeth bishop?
I caught a tremendous fish
and held him beside the boat
half out of water, with my hook
fast in a corner of his mouth.
He didn’t fight.
He hadn’t fought at all.
He hung a grunting weight,
battered and venerable
and homely. Here and there
his brown skin hung in strips
like ancient wallpaper,
and its pattern of darker brown
was like wallpaper:
shapes like full-blown roses
stained and lost through age.
He was speckled and barnacles,
fine rosettes of lime,
and infested
with tiny white sea-lice,
and underneath two or three
rags of green weed hung down.
While his gills were breathing in
the terrible oxygen
–the frightening gills,
fresh and crisp with blood,
that can cut so badly–
I thought of the coarse white flesh
packed in like feathers,
the big bones and the little bones,
the dramatic reds and blacks
of his shiny entrails,
and the pink swim-bladder
like a big peony.
I looked into his eyes
which were far larger than mine
but shallower, and yellowed,
the irises backed and packed
with tarnished tinfoil
seen through the lenses
of old scratched isinglass.
They shifted a little, but not
to return my stare.
–It was more like the tipping
of an object toward the light.
I admired his sullen face,
the mechanism of his jaw,
and then I saw
that from his lower lip
–if you could call it a lip
grim, wet, and weaponlike,
hung five old pieces of fish-line,
or four and a wire leader
with the swivel still attached,
with all their five big hooks
grown firmly in his mouth.
A green line, frayed at the end
where he broke it, two heavier lines,
and a fine black thread
still crimped from the strain and snap
when it broke and he got away.
Like medals with their ribbons
frayed and wavering,
a five-haired beard of wisdom
trailing from his aching jaw.
I stared and stared
and victory filled up
the little rented boat,
from the pool of bilge
where oil had spread a rainbow
around the rusted engine
to the bailer rusted orange,
the sun-cracked thwarts,
the oarlocks on their strings,
the gunnels–until everything
was rainbow, rainbow, rainbow!
And I let the fish go.
are there any allusions? if so explain what words and where. thanks so much

I was going to say no … but then I caught myself ‘cuz that’s not how the lit game works …
the phrase “beard of wisdom” is a reference to Horace (the Roman poet) … I dropped a link to the passage in the sources window … the phrase became a “tag” in Latin … an oft-repeated little phrase that everyone knew from their Latin classes in school …
Sapientum pascere barbam = [Latin] = To grown the beard of wisdom.
Horace actually ridicules the idea … suggests it’s pretentious to throw over the world and become a big ol’ bearded philosopher …
Elizabeth Bishop, on the other hand, seems to be using the term without any of the suggestions of play-acting …
So, I dunno, is that an allusion? At the very least, it’s a phrase that has a very specific literary and cultural history …
————————–
There’s a generalized mock epic tone to the poem, huh? Mock heroic? There’s a clear contrast between the kind of heroic epic language. She’s crafting epic similes like Homer … but then (as tends to happen in mock heroic) there’s a sudden intrusion of the decided non-heroic …
like in those lines:
I stared and stared
and victory filled up
the little rented boat,
The phrase “little rented vote” undercuts the fine heroic language of “I stared and stared/and victory filled up”

Q&A: How many lures do YOU need to fish?
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by Ole Fisherman: How many lures do YOU need to fish?
When I was a young whipper-snapper I needed 15 lb’s of tackle to go catch a bunch of 2-5LB Bass. Since recently purchasing a new Kayak, I’ve “down-sized” to 2 small plano “insert” boxes & 1 “over-stuffed” worm bag.
Let’s play “Name that Tune” I mean ,”Name that Lure”!
” I can win that tourney with one bag of worms & a 1/4 OZ spinner-bait”…..(LOL)
(er….the younger folk won’t get my “Name that Tune” reference. So, “younger folk” just lol anyway!)

Help! After cleaning our pond yesterday, all our fish died! Does anyone know why?
Posted by: | CommentsQuestion by gvdvsq05: Help! After cleaning our pond yesterday, all our fish died! Does anyone know why?
We had four young koi (about five inches long), a lot of small guppy-like fish, four fish with long, fanlike tails (I forget the breed, they were about the same size as our koi), and three smallish algae suckers. The pond is definitely big enough for all of them.
The pond was very dirty (algae mostly). Our fish seemed fine though, no abnormal appearances or behaviours. The guppy-like fish were even breeding, so the water conditions were pretty good.
We cleaned the pond (keeping some of the old water so the new water wouldn’t be such a shock to the fish), and today all our fish are dead.
Their bellies are swollen (not as big as dropsy though), and the scales around their gills are red. Other than this discolouration, there is no disturbance in the scales (none sticking out or whatever).
My husband commented that the water smelled funny “sort of like dead fish”, but this was before the death of our fish.

Sounds like chlorine poisoning – what kind of water did you use to refill the pond, and did you treat (i.e., dechlorinate) it first? Another possibility would be ammonia poisoning, as it will also burn the gills, but it generally takes longer to build up to deadly toxic levels than chlorine.
And I’m guessing your fish with long tails were either butterfly koi, or, more likely, shubunkin goldfish.
Hope this helps.

Creamy Fish with Potatoes and Fennel on a Plate

This was my first time cooking with fennel, the plant. I have used the seeds many times but never the bulb. It was very good and I will be using it again.
1 fennel bulb and stalk, cleaned and sliced
3-4 garlic cloves, minced
Heavy cream (or I used skim milk and a couple Tbs of unsalted butter)
White wine
2 lb potatoes, cut into bite-sized pieces
1 lb talapia
Paprika
Salt and pepper
Preheat your oven to 450 F. Sprinkle both sides of the fish with salt, pepper and paprika.
Put a pan over medium heat and cook the fennel with the garlic for 6-8 minutes. Add the potatoes, cream (or milk and butter) and wine. Cook for 20 minutes or until the potatoes just begin to soften.
If the pan is oven proof, add the fish and put in the oven. Otherwise transfer the vegetables and sauce to a baking dish and add the fish. Cook until the fish is done, about 20 minutes.
See it fresh out of the oven here.
