The persisting drought in central and eastern China now shows no signs of letting up with little precipitation. Our reporter Wang Guan has been following the situation in drought-hit areas. He finds out who is suffering the most from the on-going dry spell. The drought has reached epic proportions. With 5 percent of farmland cracking…aquatic life is dying prematurely… and hydro-electric power stations are struggling to create enough power. For the upcoming summer, what’s in store for millions in central China could be a summer with no rice to yield, nowhere to fish and constant power cuts. This bleak prospect is turning into reality faster than people would like. 35-year-old fisherman Huang Jiansheng does what he has to every day- navigate the dwindling Dongting lake to look for fish. But today is another day he comes back empty-handed. Huang Jiansheng, Fisherman of Yueyang, Hunan Province, said, “I have had to give up fishing. All that I am thinking is to do some part-time manual labor somewhere. Where exactly? Maybe working on cargo ships helping load and unload things. How much will they pay? less than 50 yuan a day.” Less than 50 yuan a day is probably not enough to provide for his family of five, with two sons still under the age of two. In desperate need of a job, the husband and father says every day he just hopes the employers he has had interviews with will call him up soon.
