What are some good things to pack for my kid’s lunch?

By

My son is 3 years old and attends preschool. He has had problems with GERD and poor weight gain and very picky eating since he has born (texture issue as well, totally skipped baby food!!!) He will not eat things like yogurt and pudding. He is always asking for what other kids are eating (chicken nuggets, different sandwiches, etc.) he will eat things at school he doesn’t eat at home, even if I make the exact same sandwich!!!

Also, how do I go about packing certain things, like do the parent who pack the chicken nuggets cook them and then have the teacher microwave them? He seems to be more interested in diner foods at lunch time for the main course I guess you could call it. What did you pack for your kids? I am new at this, lol. So far I just pack him grapes, carrots (cut up whole ones), home made jello cups with fruit in them, raisins, fruit snacks, sandwiches (he never eats them), milk or juice to drink, fish crackers, cheese cut into cubes, he will not eat any kind of dips, he likes peanut butter but wont dip anything in it so I pack his a spoonfuls worth of peanut butter with a spoon, lol. He will not eat any raw veggies. I normally cook or make him lunch, but now that he is in school I have to make and pack things that will last about 4 hours until lunch time, So all the things I usually prepare hot, no longer work…

Any ideas? recipes?

The snacks you are packing are awesome! I wish my kids would eat that! I sometimes put in a boiled egg. Leave it whole and they munch it like an apple. I too will be interested in what other people come up with. Good luck.

I have some dramas with my 2.5 yrs sons eating too but not so much at school. My son will not touch any meat at all. He will eat bacon but only when I make homemade pizzas and he occasionally eats ham, but not on a sandwich, just by itself. I dont really like giving him ham coz it has a lot of preservatives and chemicals in it but its ok occasionally. For school, he usually has a sandwich (sometimes he eats them, sometimes not, but definitely not with vegemite or peanut butter. Only jam or butter) I usually pack some cooked pasta or Cruskits (like crunchy savoury cracker things) or raw capsicum which he loves. He loves his yoghurt so he always has that. He loves fruit and always has heaps of fruit at school. I usually pack grapes, strawberries and an apple or banana. Then he gets dried fruit like apricots and sultanas and i always pack him some muffins or home made muesli bars that we cook together. He loves cooking and I find he is more likely to eat them if he has helped make them.

It sounds like you are doing a pretty good job. I work in a preschool in Australia and we dont have facilities to cook stuff like chicken nuggets, but your centre might be different. I would probably cook them and they can reheat them in the microwave. You could also try leftover dinner like spaghetti bolognaise or sausages that they can reheat.

You mentioned he has issues with food textures, have you spoken to a Occupational Therapist about it? He doesnt necessarily need to see one on an ongoing basis, but they might be able to give you some tips on the textures of different foods and how you can encourage him to eat. Its a sensory thing for some kids. For them, eating certain foods is much like running your fingers down a blackboard. Im hoping my son grows out of his no-meat-eating stage but if not, I will be asking an OT for some tips.
