What are the best artificial lures for bass fishing during hot summer months? Be as specific as possible. Thx!

Other info: I live in CO (Boulder area) and primarily fish from shores of small lakes. I have a belly boat, but not a motorized boat. I also do not enjoy fishing from with artificial worms. The more info the better; including lure brand, model, how to fish it, etc. Thks much!!

Worden’s Rooster Tail lures are great lures. Depending on the water, White, Pink, and Orange are great colors. The Ladybug pattern is good as well. You can use a steady retrieve or jig it. I’ve had great luck with these lures.

Top baits late in the evening work well for me.Like jitter bugs. You can even hook a trailer on the back treble that will bring more attention.Something like one of you rubber worms or a rubber skirt.Just experiment.I’ve had my best luck with rigs I just through together.

tubes and worms would be my choices. If your fishing in the heat of the day i would fish it like it was cold, slow and slower. with the tubes and worms you can aggravate the fish into a bite simply by having the bait “in there face” for a longer period of time. My color choices vary depending on the water clarity and the natural forage that is in the water. I am sure there are a lot of other ways to fish during the heat of the day this, is just my way. Good Luck

I love this question in the dog days of summer you are fishing for educated lethargic bass who have seen it all I like focusing on deep weed edges to find them and depending on their mood I will start with a good search bait like a rapala DT 6 or 10 on perch pattern or a strikeking promodel with enough weight to get down to the fish as heavy as 3/4oz if there are no aggressive fish in the mix but I get a few bites or follows then I switch to a finess presentation like a MIZMO tube in a natural color try to make your tube match the color of the bottom (thats what crayfish do) also youcan’t beat the dropshot rig in deep water I like to use a 4″ berkley power worm in assorted colors or a 3″ yum dinger both are great also if your up to it be on the water just before sunup and trow a pop R or I am partial to lurh jensen pj pop (this one is tough to find) good luck I could go on for hours

In the hot summer months i like to use the rebel Pop-R topwater popper around shorelines and piers. Cast em as close as you can to the piers and “bloop” them in rather quickly giving them a pause or two in your retrieve. Bass love to explode on these. Just make sure you feel the weight of the fish before you set the hook cause sometimes theyll miss the lure, turn around, and hit it again. I was fishing with my dad on a warm summer afternoon one year and he had a tremendous strike. He thought he had a huge one on. Turns out he had actually caught two 2lb. bass at the same time. This is quite a feat considering the Pop-R is only about 2 1/2 inches long with 2 treble hooks.
Give em a try. You might even get a pike or two.

I would have to say the YUM! Buzz Frog. This lure is great for working on top of matted weeds. Ive caughtn many fish over 18”. Mainly youll get bass but the occansional pike will also bite at it. My favriote color would be the Green Pumpkin/ Chartruese color. Looks exactly like a real frog. To rig the frog is real easy, Just tye on a 3/0 Weedless hook and slide the frog all the way untill the hook point pooks out near the end of the frog. Now watchout because when you get a bite, the bites are explosive. But when they take the lure dont tug right away. Reel in the slack and when you feel the weight of the fish the set the hook.

Good Luck Fishing

Summer time bass fishing means topwater lures in the mosning and evening. Use any brand of buzzbaits or hula poppers, give the hula popper quick twitches and allow to sit for a few seconds between twitches. In the midday hours go with pretty much any brand of spinnerbait, vary your retreive speed until you find fish.

I’m gonna have to go with the Dr. on this question! (Nice answer Doc!)

I would add, “Deep is good, but O2 is better sometimes.”

Going “deep” can prove successful, but in “blazing Sun” condition’s “sometimes” Bass find a bit of shade under docks/structure & bury themselves in thick, matted ,weed-cover.

The reason: Look at the weeds at the shore of your lake. Do you notice “little bubble’s”? These litttle bubble’s are water plant’s creating O2. As the water heat’s up, fish need more O2 to function , so , they go where the weeds are.

Also, ask yourself: On a super-hot ,muggy, day would you rather sit in 90+ degree sun & “gorge” yourself on a 2 LB Ribeye Steak & potatoes , OR would you rather have a lite salad or pop-sickle?

Fish are the same way. During the heat of the worst summer day’s, Bass tend to want something easily “eaten” & digested. A small 1/4 OZ 4″ Jig & Grub, a smaller 4″ Rapala minnow, 4-6″ worms & lizard’s, Etc. work well in “enticing” them to strike because they can “easily & readily digest and engulf” creatures of this size without expending a bunch of “energy”.

Oh, and the comment ,”I also do not enjoy fishing with artificial worm’s”, is like saying, ” I’m going to decide what the fish will eat today, whether they like it or NOT!”
Worm’s & soft plastic’s are “essential” in catching Bass, PERIOD. If you eliminated all soft plastic’s, bass-fishermen would have a HELL of a time trying to catch anything!,(esp in WEEDS/weedy condition’s!).

If it’s really “heating up” where you are, try going fishing at night or in the late afternoon or morning. That’s when you can throw 8-10″ worm’s and larger bait’s!

“Best Bet” during hot sunny day’s : You just can’t go wrong with a 4-6″ “dead-stick-type” plastic worm, (like a Senko or Hum-dinger), fished “weightless”, near a deep weedbed’s “drop-off”. OR flipping a weedless jig in matted weeds, under dock’s, & near “break-lines”. It may take repeated cast’s and patience to “entice” that sow Bass buried deep in that weedbed to “take a chance” on your lure. Remember, “slow & steady” win’s the race.

Good luck! Hope ya get one!

(FYI: Don’t give me best answer. So far, If anyone should get it, it should be the Doc. Thank’s!)
