I would start with a hand spear. It may make you realize that spearing isn’t that easy. I’ve never seen a “spear gun”. Dark house spearing is legal in Michigan but you still have to observe the size limits and season. I wonder what sense it makes to throw back a fish with holes in it that is an inch or two too small. I’ve seen people use pontoon boats with spot lights at night to spear non sport fish. I’ve heard of shooting fish with a bow and arrow but it seems a little hairy to me shooting an arrow with a line attached to it. Any snag and the arrow could come right back at you. I’ve heard of using a piece of rubber like an inner tube to propel a spear but never seen anyone do it. Sounds clumsy to me. I think throwing it by hand is easier. Here are two tips on spearing fish. 1. Don’t throw the spear from above the water, put the head in first to avoid the splash wich always spooks the fish. 2. Tie the rope to the head of the spear rather than the end of the handle. You can use a key ring on the end of the handle to keep the rope out of the way while throwing. Don’t put the rope through the ring just have the ring pinching the rope. This way after you spear a fish, give the rope a slight jerk to dislodge it from the key ring. Now when you lift the spear the tines will come up first (points up) so you won’t pull the spear right out of the fish and lose it. One more thing, have plenty of rope to reach bottom and tie the other end to the boat or your wrist, this way you won’t lose your spear. Don’t be in a big hurry to pull your spear back when you spear one. This will pull the spear right out. Drive it all the way to the bottom and let it sit a minute. Let the fish lose some fight and die a little before retrieving the spear. Good luck and be careful.
