Macks I am not sure about but stripers will go after a chunk of mackerel. Get one of them, cut it up and put it on the hook. Also try sardine, anchovy, pile worms (sandworms), blood worms or shad.
Out here they both will hit rattlin spots and do. If you find you need to cast them further, put a double tie on sinker ( 1 – 1 1/2 oz) two feet ahead of the bait and start cranking it back as soon as it touches down. if you use a diamond jig as the weight you could catch more than one at a time.
Mackerel are most often caught on mackerel “trees” if you want to catch multiple fish at a time. No actual bait is needed just the “trees” which are generally a set of 4 or 5 hooks with colored plastic tubing spread out of 3 or 4 feet of line. These trees can be bought anywhere even Walmart generally has tons of them. They can probably be caught on any small shiny lure but I have only ever fished for them with the trees and have never used any type of bait.
As for stripers I have also never used any actually bait only lures but do know that some people fish them but just using a chunk of herring, alewife or other fish on a hook and cast it out on bottom, or troll slowly form a boat. I have always caught them with lures that resemble small fish, normally 4 to 6 inch ones or on same size “poppers”.
