what kind of reel do you use to surf fish?
ByI’ve looked, but couldn’t find any detail about surf fishing on the internet. I’ve seen pictures of people using both spinning reels and conventional reels so I’m assuming you can use both. what are some good beginner reels for both types that are under $200? and what are the merits of using each type of reel?

Bait caster reels take more practice casting than spinners but I feel like I can control the fish better with a bait caster, particularly big strong fish. You can get more bang for your buck with a spinner and for $120 or so you can get one that’s very adequate. When you cast a spinning reel there is nothing moving but the line playing off of the spool. A bait caster has the entire spool spinning and the friction created limits the length of the cast unless you spend a lot of $ to get a high quality one. If you don’t need to cast more than 75 yds or so then spend $130 to $180 on a bait caster. You’ll need it to hold at least 200 yds of 16lb. Most fish I catch in the surf are only 50yds out. But I fish an area that gets deep very quickly. If you need to cast 100yds or further then get a spinner, It just depends on where you fish. I look for steep narrow beaches that give way to deep water close to shore not big wide flat beaches that have knee deep water 100 yds out.Practice is the key to bait casters. they can be discouraging at first. But it’s worth the wait. Try a Shimano reel in a bait caster. Stay away from anything that says Ryobi.
