What’s the best way to hook live bait like Anchovies for fishing? (To keep the bait alive the longest)?
ByThere are many ways such as the nose hook (left to right of of nose), the lip hook (Top to bottom of the mouth), the anal hook (Won’t it die fast?), and the collar hook (Which i am currently using, hooking it behind the gill).
Which is the best way to hook the fish if I’m trying to keep it living for a long time? I don’t understand the anal hook because wouldn’t that kill the bait quickly? What’s the best way if i’m going to sink my bait to the bottom of the ocean to catch rockfish?
Thanks

Through the lips. Or just under the skin in front of the top fin, make sure not to go down to far or you’ ll hit the spine. And last but not least, just under the skin right behind the bottom fin.

AHAHAHAHAHA ANAL HOOK.
i’m sorry. hook it really shallow through the back. Make sure you don’t hit the spine, or it’ll be paralyzed and just wriggle around on the bottom
Lip or nose hooking is also good. I’ve had sardines live nose hooked for 2 hours.

I like to hook ‘em thru the lips, bottom to top.
If you hook a fish through the tail, it won’t be able to breathe while you’re pulling it backwards through the water.
I use an egg sinker above a barrel swivel followed by a leader, so the bait isn’t twisting my line as it swims round. A glass bead between the sinker and swivel will prevent the sinker from cutting through the knot.

lip hook it or skin hook it with light hooks don’t use really heavy hooks, that might be the problem

l’m guessing you are referring to west coast deep water rockfish, commonly and collectively called “rock cod”?
rockfish are not selective as to whether the anchovy is alive or dead. l do well for them by just using a large hook and run it through the anchovy twice, killing it of course, but it stays on the hook more securely and not as easily removed by short striking fish.
now, calicos, yellowtail and others, l prefer the collar hooking method.
and the anal hooking method isn’t actually in the anus. just below the spine between the anus and the tail. by the anal fin. supposedly keeps a fly-lined bait swimming closer to the water surface. but, too, the hook does tear out from there more easily.
