When you release a fish you caught with the hook still inside does that fish die?

Let me clarify. When you catch a fish and you can not get the hook out you cut the line and let the fish go with the hook inside its mouth. I’ve heard that the area swells up and releases the hook?
Can anyone let me know what happens?

That’s the idea. The fish’s immune system eventually rejects the hook in some form or another. The rule I have heard about fish though is if it’s bleeding, it’s dead.

If you don’t damage anything while unsucessfully removing the hook, and leave it in the fish should be in most cases be fine. I have seen fish that have had hooks in their mouths its usually quite corroded and are just about ready to fall out.

So that you don’t have this problem debarb your hooks. Since I’ve been doing that I can’t think of a time when my hook was stuck in a fishes mouth.

    HOpe that helps

If the hook does no damage the fish will live with it until it rusts away. If there is damage causing bleeding the fish will likely die.

The fish will not die unless you have done some serious damage to the fish. I caught a walleye once, cut the line since the hook was too deep, and then caught the fish again 20 minutes later.

I also caught a walleye and when I filleted it out, it had an entire jighead in it’s stomach.

The fish will eventually disolve the hook, it does not rust away.

no. the fish has a chemical that melt hooks inside its stomach

As long as you didn’t damage the gills the fish should make it unless the hook is blocking the entrance to the stomach and the fish cant eat, usually the hook will rust away in short order.
