where to find a large glass bowl (like 5gallons+)?

By

I’m thinking about doing a LARGE glass bowl for my sister for christmas. heavily planted with a nice sponge filter with some kind of shrimp and maybe a snail or a betta or something (obviously a heater if need be). she’s all about things looking nice and likes the look of bowls plus she really doesn’t have a lot of room for a tank. I told her multiple times they’re terrible death traps. so I think it would be a nice present to give her a bowl that isn’t a death trap.

I want a glass bowl that is 5gallon+ does anyone know where I can find one? I am NOT looking for a biorb. these are ridiculously expensive and misleading and I refuse to support them. I am having a hard time finding a large bowl though, I’ve looked at craft stores and pet stores.

even a large jar (like this, but bigger!) I have one last store near me to check but so I’m starting to look for online options:

http://www.amazon.com/Anchor-Hocking-Montana-2-Gallon-Brushed/dp/B000RMTG3S/ref=sr_1_12?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1288995730&sr=1-12

I’d rather not have 2.5gallons because after the gravel and filter and plants it will be closer to 1gallon and a betta with the shrimp would really be nice but I’m not adding a betta if it won’t be enough room.

and before anyone lectures. I have 5 tanks of my own and 4 bettas and other various fish. I’ve been keeping fish for years. I know all about proper betta care, the nitrogen cycle, and that bowls are terrible places. however. a large bowl with filtration and heating is not a bad home. I clean her house once a week so I will be doing the weekly water changes. this will be a well cared for TANK that just happens to be round lol

btw, if I can’t find one large enough I’m making her a chair. I’m not settling for something too small and putting fish in danger. so no worries.
REALLY?! bettas are jumpers? somehow after keeping all sorts of fish for years including lots of bettas and the 4 I currently have I’ve never learned this….
lol that was sarcasm, I know they jump.

Sorry, can’t help you with finding the bowl, but I’d like to advise that whatever container you find needs to have a lid. Bettas are jumpers.

Edit:
Good Lawd. No need to get snotty. My crystal ball is broken today, so I was unable to psychically glean your unparalleled wisdom in this area.
Perhaps if you had prefaced your question by stating that you know everything there is to know about everything, it would have been clearer to simple folks like me just trying to help. Geesh.

You can try to find extra large punch bowls, floating candle/flower holders, etc. You can try Ebay, thrift shops, party supply stores, home stores, etc. Most of the large ones are only 2-3 gallons, but every now and then you find a larger one. Craft stores are probably one of the better places to look as well. The larger glass bowls get expensive and soon the biorbs don’t look too bad. Also try to get one with a larger surface area vs. a perfect sphere with a a small opening at the top (more oxygen in the tank). Lots of wedding supply places or places like pottery barn might have larger bowls for centerpieces what hold candles and dried flowers, but I am not sure if they can handle all that water (glass too thin) but you might find some cheaper acrylic ones.

You should have better luck finding a cylinder than a spherical shaped container as well. There are plenty of 5 gallon odd shaped tanks too, like a hexagon 5 gallon.

Some nice alternatives that still look awesome, just not round. I personally love cube tanks, especially the frameless cubes (1st link):

And just to drool and gasp at price, check these nice 5 gallon cylinder tanks out….thought the biorb was bad? but these are nicer

Also, check your local plastic places (many places have them). I have a place called “Tripp Plastic” and have gotten leftover tube piping cheap. It is really easy to make your own tank, or you can try to get them to do a custome tank.

Yes, it is true, betta are jumpers, or can be anyway. You can make a lid pretty easy.
