1

yea cos the whitebait are so small that they’d fit through the holes of a normal net

2

that may be easy to catch but it looks fiddly to actually get them into the bucket, dont get me wrong i love mahi kai but that looks harder then scoop netting the little morsales

It is a whitebait drag net. You can’t actually buy them in a shop. You can buy the net sock but you have to make the frame yourself. Best wishes Allan Burgess

what type of net was that?????

Many years ago as a family we would go down to that spot and tow around our customised scoop net and catch a lot of bait. Some days there would be Kahawai in the shallows which would occasionally end up in some ones net. It was good to have sorters and fishers as it can be time consuming to sort through the catch. Nice clip.

Set nets are more work setting up. You have to move it with the tide. I don’t have the time or patience to sit all day. A drag net is easier to use and transport. You avoid the crowd by going down to the surf. If you spend all week whitebaiting a set net would be less work overall and catch more. Once set up a set net catches bait while you sit and watch. With a drag net you have to work it. If I get a few cupfuls in an hour Im happy. Some days you catch heaps other days hardly any! Allan

Would you say you catch more whitebait drag netting or just setting net up?
