Why is my aquarium water turning brown?
ByOk, I have a 55 gallon aquarium with lots of fish. I went to That Fish Place (amazing store) and got 5 ruffled swords and 4 amazon swords. They started to die off in about 4 days because they needed to get used to my water before they grew leaves. After they died off, the new shoots started to grow in perfectly fine, except my dead plants were still in my aquarium. While the dead plants were in my aquarium, the aquarium water started to turn brown! I think that it might be from the oils of my dead plants, but I’m not sure. Also, if anyone know what it is I would like to know how long it would take to clear up. If you go to Flickr.com and type in IDAQ you can see multiple uploaded pictures of my tank.

You should probably remove all the dead plants, and try to regrow them in another container? Just use the tank water…. I would also do a 25% water change, vacuum the gravel, and check the carbon in the filter. Good luck!

Do you have any bog wood or any type of wood in your tank, tannins released from the wood can turn it yellow or brown.

It’s caused by the driftwood in your tank. Driftwood naturally releases tannins into the water, which softens the water and creates a brown tinge.
It doesn’t clear on it’s own, but can be removed with water changes or activated carbon in your filter. The driftwood’s ability to turn the water brown will also weaken over time as it loses tannins.

it could possibly be a bacteria bloom caused by the rotting plants.
uneaten food and dead leaves/ plants should be removed as soon as you notice it
