Why is my fishing reel messing up?
ByOk, so i was fighting a monster bass on some fishing line that was like 6lb test for a 10lb bass the line was holding up quite well, but when i quit reeling to pull the rod to bring him closer, the reel started to spin the opposite way, at first i thought i clicked the button to cast, but that was not it. so why is my reel doing that? please help
also it is a Shakespeare alpha 310 gear ratio 5:1:1

your spool may have broken or your drag is broken inspect the real to see if all the functions like drag spool release and spool brakes work

Is it a spinning reel? If so it is possible that you accidentally flipped the reverse spin on. There should be a little switch on the bottom of the reel which you can flip back and forth, one way will allow it to spin forward and reverse. That’s if you’re lucky. If not, you probably broke a gear or something in the drag system.
If it’s a baitcasting reel, something broke inside the reel. I have a baitcasting reel which does the same thing to me at times.

Some reels are equipped with an anti-reverse lever. If you accidentally hit it during the battle that would cause the exact problem you are describing and would be the simplest to fix.Lets hope that is all it was.If not, something is broken.

If the handle also spun backwards your anti reverse lever was unlocked. You could have accidentally hit the star drag or it may have not been engaged tightly. Otherwise something broke inside. Don’t say him ’cause that was a sow.
